Aussie Chefs Love a Taste of Harmony

November 17, 2009

A culinary crew of Australia's biggest celebrity chefs has united to celebrate cultural diversity in the most delicious way - and want Australians to join them in March 2010!

A Taste of Harmony celebrates Australia's hotpot of cultures through the joy of food.

The week-long A Taste of Harmony celebrations begin on March 15, 2010 and end with National Harmony Day on March 21, 2010.

Workplaces around Australia - big or small, and from every industry - are encouraged to gather their colleagues together for a tasty multicultural lunch.

Workers can bring dishes that reflect their cultural background, their favourite ethnic dish, or cook something from a country they have never tried before.

More than 60,000 Australians shared deliciously diverse lunches in 2009, and next year is already shaping up to be even bigger!

Best of all, A Taste of Harmony is free to participate and does not involve any fundraising. It's simply asking people to share a meal and potentially learn something new about their workmates' diverse cultural backgrounds.

Eleven celebrity chefs and foodies, passionate about celebrating cultural diversity and the joy of food, are supporting A Taste of Harmony in 2010. They are:

  • Shannon Bennett (Vue de monde, Melbourne)
  • Tobie Puttock (Fifteen, Melbourne)
  • Karen Martini (Mr Wolf, Melbourne, Sunday Life food editor and Better Homes and Gardens, Seven Network)
  • Alastair McLeod (Bretts Wharf, Brisbane and Ready Steady Cook, Network Ten)
  • Maeve O'Meara (Food Safari, SBS and director of Gourmet Safari tours)
  • Miguel Maestre (Boys Weekend, Lifestyle Food and new series Miguel's Tropical Kitchen)
  • Dominique Rizzo (9am with David and Kim and Ready Steady Cook, Network Ten and Pure Food Cooking, Brisbane)
  • Kate Lamont (Lamont's, Western Australia and regular ABC Radio Perth guest chef)
  • Steve Sunk (The Northern Territory's Walkabout Chef and regular ABC Radio Darwin guest chef)
  • Judith Sweet (Slow Food Tasmania president and regular ABC Radio Hobart guest chef)
  • Serif Kaya (Ottoman Cuisine, Canberra and Sydney).

Chefs are available for interview, photo shoot or to give recipes exploring:

  • Their cultural backgrounds and how it has inspired and enriched their cooking and their lives
  • The role cultural diversity plays in their lives, at work and their friendships
  • Why celebrating Australia's cultural diversity is so important
  • Why food is the perfect medium to explore different cultures and bring people together.

On A Taste of Harmony's website (www.tasteofharmony.org), participants can upload and share their favourite multicultural recipes along with the celebrity chef's, share advice and tips on making your lunch celebration the best possible, and see event photos from last year and upload new ones.

A Taste of Harmony is an initiative of the Scanlon Foundation and is supported by the Australian Multicultural Foundation and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
