Cultural diversity is one of the most important building blocks of our nation and A Taste of Harmony is a fun way to acknowledge our rich multicultural heritage. Australia is comprised of people from nearly every country on Earth with at least one in five of us having a parent who was born overseas. As a result, immigration is a defining feature of this country – it’s helped shape the way we live, what we eat, and how we work together.
I’ve spent my whole career working in business and I’m all too aware that to have a successful workplace, everyone needs to get along. The mission of the Scanlon Foundation is to "to support the creation of a larger cohesive Australian society." We believe that workplaces are certainly an environment where we can assist in making this happen.
A person’s workplace is in many respects a microcosm of our broader society. It often brings together people of different ages, educational backgrounds, geographic locations and cultures. A workplace thrives or falters based on the ability of the people within it to work together to achieve shared goals. And it is workplaces where the full potential of cultural diversity can be embraced and realised.
Immigration has been such a significant and successful part of our development as a nation. It’s easy to lose sight of just how remarkable it is that we live relatively peacefully amid this wonderful melting pot of cultures, beliefs and traditions. The fact that now, we’re almost blasé about our cultural diversity shows just how far we’ve evolved as a nation. But I believe our cohesive, culturally diverse society is something for which we should feel proud. Australia is recognised as one of the most socially cohesive nations in the world and that is something definitely well worth celebrating.
