Harmony Day and A Taste of Harmony
Harmony Day is on March 21 each year, celebrating the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promoting the benefits of cultural diversity.
The key message of Harmony Day is 'Everyone Belongs'. It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Since Harmony Day began ten years ago, thousands of schools, community groups and organisations across Australia have hosted Harmony Day events.
Harmony Day this year is supported by A Taste of Harmony, which aims to encourage all Australian workplaces to celebrate cultural diversity through food.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, said the Australian Government vision is to build on the cultural, linguistic and religious diversity that has been a critical part of Australia's success to date and is a key to our future.
"In Australia, we have a great history of welcoming and settling people from every corner of the world, but we cannot rest on our laurels," Mr Ferguson said.
"Building respect between people, whatever their background, helps to break down the barriers that can divide us by promoting understanding and acceptance.
"Our diversity and our connections to all parts of the world gives Australia an edge over our international counterparts and enhances our competitiveness.
"I would encourage all Australian workplaces to join in and celebrate our diversity, and the benefits it brings, through A Taste of Harmony and Harmony Day.
"I salute Mr Peter Scanlon, the Scanlon Foundation and its staff for this great initiative," he added.
