A Taste of Harmony: Celebrating 18 Years of Connection in Workplaces

In 2008, A Taste of Harmony began with a simple but powerful idea: bring people together over food to celebrate the many cultures that make up Australia.

Eighteen years later, the concept remains the same — but the impact has grown. Each year, thousands of workplaces across the country host A Taste of Harmony events, creating moments of connection that go far beyond the lunch table.

From small teams sharing homemade dishes to large organisations hosting cultural activities, these events are an opportunity to build understanding and strengthen workplace relationships.

Why it matters

  • We are one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Over 300 languages are spoken in Australia, and more than half of Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was.
  • Inclusion starts with connection. Sharing food and stories is a simple way to break down barriers and start meaningful conversations.

More than one day

While many workplaces host their A Taste of Harmony event during the official celebration month, the principles can be applied all year round — whether it’s marking cultural dates, sharing recipes, or simply taking time to learn more about each other’s backgrounds.

As we look ahead to our next chapter, one thing remains clear: when we share a meal, we share a moment of understanding.
